Painting My Story: Reflecting on the Importance of Art in My Life

Art has always been a passion of mine, manifesting in various forms throughout different stages of my life. I can vividly recall attempting to replicate scenes from Christmas cards during my elementary years, and eagerly conjuring up imaginative arts and crafts projects. However, as high school and college rolled around, I seemed to set aside this creative side, perhaps due to shifting focus towards other interests.

Upon entering adulthood, I reignited my artistic flair through diverse outlets such as sewing, floral arrangements, photography, arts and crafts, and scrapbooking. I see now that each phase has been a stepping stone to the artist I am today as it dawned on me that creating is where I truly feel alive.

Interestingly, despite years of creative endeavors, the idea of painting never crossed my mind until approximately 11 years ago. It was then that I stumbled upon a painting class at a local art store and decided to give it a shot. Persuading my mother to join me, we acquired our supplies and embarked on the class. While I fell head over heels for painting, my mother didn't share the same sentiment. Consequently, I continued attending acrylic painting classes on my own with an exceptional teacher that guided me as I eagerly anticipated each class session. Eleven years later I’m still enjoying this journey.

Although the majority of my art involves acrylic painting, I also enjoy delving into the complex world of mixed media and other art forms that capture the essence of the emotions I'm trying to convey.

The driving force behind my art is the sheer joy of creation! Confronting a blank canvas, often the toughest hurdle, and transforming it into something beautiful and profound. The act of creating is so engrossing that time slips away effortlessly, a state of flow, where the outside world fades away (much to my husband's chagrin come dinnertime).

Nature and the world around me, with its boundless beauty and secrets, is a source of inspiration that never disappoints. Sometimes, inspiration strikes in the form of a soul-stirring moment that simply uplifts my spirits. Many of my pieces harbor a hidden story or meaning, unfortunately not always shared with those who acquire my artwork. Nonetheless, I hope the essence of each creation manages to convey the specific message intended for the recipient.

I hope my journey can be a spark that ignites someone else’s creative journey. I’ve included one of my very first paintings and one that I’ve just finished.
